President Joe Biden on Tuesday was meeting with other leaders of the Group of Seven nations, who were expected to press him to keep U.S. troops in Afghanistan beyond an Aug. 31 deadline.

The Biden administration has set that date for the withdrawal of all American troops. A Taliban spokesman said Tuesday that the U.S. must evacuate people from Afghanistan by the 31st, and that the group would accept “no extensions.”

G-7 leaders are meeting to discuss possibly extending an evacuation past the deadline for the U.S. pullout despite a Taliban warning that would be a “red line.”

The White House said Biden is meeting with leaders to “discuss continuing our close coordination on Afghanistan policy, humanitarian assistance, and evacuating our citizens, the brave Afghans who stood with us over the last two decades, and other vulnerable Afghans.”

Biden is scheduled to speak at noon Eastern on Afghanistan, the White House says.
